The Lions were the obvious aggressor in the first half, running the ball at will and applying pressure to San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy on almost 60% of his dropbacks. The Niners had to overcome a 24-7 hole to get there.
However, spurred on by wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s 51-yard reception after Lions cornerback Kindle Vildor’s helmet deflected a pass, the veteran-laden Niners refused to give up, scoring 17 points in an eight-minute stretch to tie the game. With 9:52 remaining, kicker Jake Moody’s 33-yard field goal gave the Niners their first lead, 27-24.
The Niners secured the victory with their second-of-the-game fourth-down stop in their own territory, a 3-yard touchdown run by running back Elijah Mitchell to make it 34–24, and an onside kick recovery by Kittle.

With their incredible 34-31 comeback victory against the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game, the 49ers have earned a spot in the Super Bowl and the opportunity to exact revenge on the Chiefs on February 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
It was matched with the 2012 Niners’ comeback from a 17-point deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons for the greatest comeback in an NFC Championship Game.
It was also a small measure of payback for the 1957 Niners, who, ironically, led the Lions 24-7 at halftime and 27-7 in the 1957 Western Conference playoffs before losing 31-27.
After the game, the Niners surpassed the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots to take the lead in NFL history with 38 postseason victories. Since taking over as head coach in 2017, Kyle Shanahan has won eight postseason games, tying Tom Flores for the second-best percentage amongst coaches with at least ten games. Andy Reid of Kansas City leads all other coaches with fourteen playoff victories.
The Niners, playing in their fourth NFC Championship contest in five years and their third straight year, brought bitter memories of their defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles into Sunday’s contest.
The Niners, who knew better than anyone this side of Kansas City just how hard it is to climb the mountain to get back to this point of the postseason, were mourning a wasted opportunity after that defeat, in which Purdy tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow during the first quarter.
Trent Williams, a left tackle, revealed on Thursday how challenging it is.
“If you’ve been there, you know what it takes to get back there,” Williams stated. “Obviously, we’ve been there for the past two years. Because you want to get everything back in a single day, you also kind of need to be in control. At OTAs, your goal is to win a championship on the first day. You must exercise patience and recognize that this is a marathon rather than a sprint.
After the game, Nick Bosa spoke with the media and expressed his dedication on winning the Super Bowl, saying, “We most certainly are not done.” https://x.com/NBCS49ers/status/1751811463889739880?s=20

With a couple massive scrambles in the second half, Brock Purdy took matters into his own hands.
Meanwhile Lions Camp was heart broken they had so many hopes with their talented team and they played their hearts out right from the start of the season but came short of Super Bowl.

“I simply felt great about our conversion.” Dan Campbell, speaking of gutsy fourth-down calls
As San Francisco’s defense produced just enough crucial plays to stave off Detroit’s powerful attack, Brock Purdy had another strong performance for the 49ers after settling into the game and throwing for 267 yards and 1 Touchdown.
Though their marathon is far from over, the 49ers are nearing the finish line. The cherry on top is that they will have an opportunity to make up for the defeat to Kansas City in their previous Super Bowl trip. With 8:53 remaining in the game, the Niners led by 10 points and held the ball, but they lost 31–20 as the Chiefs scored the last 21 points of the game.
Since then, Kansas City has made two trips back to the Super Bowl, winning one of them, and they will be the defending champions going into this one. The 49ers were 2.5-point favorites when they began at ESPN BET, but within 20 minutes of the line being set, it had dropped to -1.5, and on Sunday night, it was as low as -1 at several sportsbooks.
The Niners, who are tied for second place all-time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys, will be making their seventh Super Bowl appearance. In the event that the 49ers lost to the Chiefs, San Francisco would have won its sixth Lombardi Trophy, matching the record held by the Patriots and Steelers.
