Rory wins Back to back Race to Dubai Championships, Nicolai Hojgaard wins his third title on the DP World Tour

Rory McIlroy won the Race to Dubai championship for the second year in a row and for the fifth time in his career on the DP World Tour. But Nicolai Hojgaard was this week’s winner, his Ryder Cup colleague.

Nicolai Hojgaard, who placed second in the Nedbank Golf Challenge last week in South Africa, defeated Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Wallace, and Viktor Hovland by two shots with an 8-under 64 at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course. This feat included five consecutive birdies on the back nine, from Nos. 13 to 17. Nicolai Hojgaard finished at the Top with 21 under par. This was the 22-year-old’s maiden Rolex Series victory and third DP World Tour championship.

“It’s the sweetest one, it means a lot,” Nicolai Højgaard remarked to Sky Sports. “Over the last few years, a great deal of hard work has been put in; this is in honor of my family and everything they have done over the years. There was a great deal of effort put into this, so it’s amazing how well it turned out.

“We were just focused on the task at hand today; we are aware that there are many birdies, but we still need to make the shots and hole the putts. Anything is possible.” Approaching 18 with the knowledge that there’s a strong chance feels great.

“I had some excellent golf. I must admit, in my three victories, this is the strongest field I have faced and the finest golf I have played in a tournament. I felt good about my game before I left, and it feels nice to finish it this way. I can’t believe we ended the year on such a positive tone, but this is the loveliest way to end the year. I’m going to love it.

Following his victory in yet another season-long championship, McIlroy, who tied for 22nd at 10 under, seemed content.

It’s excellent. I believe it demonstrates my yearly consistency. I believe I’ve won eight season-long titles between here and America in the previous ten years, so it just goes to show how consistent I am,” he remarked. “”On the final green, I told Harry that while I don’t think many men can defeat me all season, there are a few folks that can kind of beat me one week or the next week.”

Matt Wallace’s incredible third round score of 60 gave him a one-shot lead over Fleetwood and Hovland going into the final day, but a final-round score of 69 on Sunday forced him to settle for a share of second place. Both Fleetwood, another Englishman, and Hovland, a Norwegian, concluded with scores of 68. 

Thirston Lawerence, Jon Rahm, and Mattieu Pavon finished at T5(fifth) with 17 under.
