Miami Dolphins edge rusher Jaelan Phillips suffered a season-ending torn Achilles during the team’s 34-13 victory over the Jets, as confirmed by an MRI, which was disclosed by head coach Mike McDaniel on Saturday. https://x.com/NFL/status/1728481239215091927?s=20

To make matters worse, the tear happened right before Phillips and the defense put on a fantastic display. With just over nine minutes left in the fourth quarter, Miami was comfortably ahead of New York, 27–6, when Phillips went down as soon as he pushed off to attempt a pass rush.

The 8-3 Dolphins, who are presently leading the AFC East and hoping to win the division for the first time since 2008, have suffered a severe setback.

This season, Phillips and defensive tackle Christian Wilkins have developed a strong edge-rushing tandem that has accounted for six sacks between them. Together, they lead the club with 6.5 sacks.

In his eight games played, he has also produced 43 tackles, 11 quarterback hits, seven tackles for loss, and one interception.

The Dolphins will be more dependent on Emmanuel Ogbah and Andrew Van Ginkel in his absence; Ogbah contributed 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble on Friday.

As Phillips recovers, this summer will also be very important for his future in Miami.

In the offseason, the third-year professional can choose to have his rookie option picked up for a fifth year. The Dolphins have until May 2 to fulfill this obligation.
