The Minnesota Vikings have made a significant move in their quarterback lineup, signing Sam Darnold to a one-year deal worth up to $10 million. Ian Rappoport posted on X https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1767416315935953277?s=20

This signing comes after the departure of Kirk Cousins, who agreed to a four-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons. Let’s delve into Darnold’s journey, from his college days to his current opportunity with the Vikings.

 Early Years and College Career

Sam Darnold was born on June 5, 1997, in Dana Point, California. He attended San Clemente High School, where he excelled not only in football but also in basketball. His basketball skills, including precise passing and court vision, would later translate well to the football field.

As a high school quarterback, Darnold broke records, throwing five touchdown passes in a single game. His talent caught the attention of college scouts, and he committed to play football at the University of Southern California (USC).

At USC, Darnold continued to impress. In 2016, he won the Archie Griffin Award as the nation’s most valuable player. The same year, he was named Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year. His ability to read defenses, make quick decisions, and deliver accurate passes set him apart.

 The NFL Journey

In the 2018 NFL Draft, the New York Jets selected Darnold as the third overall pick. At just 21 years old, he became the youngest opening-day starting quarterback since the AFL-NFL merger. Darnold’s early years with the Jets were marked by inconsistency and injuries, but he showed glimpses of his potential.

In 2021, Darnold was traded to the Carolina Panthers. Although his time there didn’t yield the desired results, he gained valuable experience. The Panthers believed in his talent and invested in him, but circumstances led to a different path.

In 2021 he played 12 games with panthers with 243 completions 9 Touchdowns and 13 Interceptions. In his win-loss record with the Panthers, he was 8–10 which was quite average considering expectations from him in the starter role for franchise.

In 2023, Darnold joined the San Francisco 49ers as a backup. He played in 10 games, completing 28-of-46 passes for 297 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Despite being a backup, he remained hungry for an opportunity to prove himself. He showed glimpses to be a good quarter back with few completions in his 49ers tenure when he was given opportunity to play.

 The Vikings’ Gamble

Now, with the Vikings, Darnold has a chance to compete for the starting role. The team hopes that his raw talent, combined with coaching from offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, will unlock his full potential. Josh McCown will be the QB position coach. The one-year deal gives Darnold the platform to showcase his abilities and potentially secure a long-term starting position.

The Vikings’ decision to sign Darnold is a calculated gamble. If he can regain his college form and overcome past challenges, he could become a reliable starter. However, the pressure is on—the Vikings need stability at the quarterback position, and Darnold aims to deliver.

With the star wide receiver like Justin Jefferson he has the perfect opportunity to excel. Jefferson is considered one on the top WR in NFL right now. He and Kirk cousins gave offensive edge to vikings over any other team which was the reason for their improved record. In 2023 he completed 1074 yards with 5 TDs. If Sam Darnold develops good connection with him of the field than he can surely get the starting spot.

As the 2024 season approaches, all eyes will be on Sam Darnold. Can he rise to the occasion and lead the Vikings to success? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Darnold’s journey from USC to the NFL continues, and the Vikings are betting on his potential.
