Why Victor Wembanyama will be Rookie of the year!

 

Victor Wembanyama who is drafted as number one pick in 2023 draft pick is considered one of the generational prospects in NBA history. I think after 2003 when Lebron james was drafted the hype is created for Victor Wembanayama and that hype was proven to be right because King James has broke all the NBA records he is highest scorer in NBA history on All time list and broke Kareem unbreakable record.

Why there is so much hype around Wemba’s entrance into NBA?
If we see Wemba’s height and wingspan currently 19 years old, Victor Wembanyama stands at 7 foot and 3.5 inches, weighs 209 pounds, and boasts a massive 8-foot wingspan. He is the tallest player in NBA right now beating Boban Marjanovic and Kristaps Porzingis. His wing span is built in advantage over many athletes in league as its said Basketball is tall men’s game.

Now the question arise apart from his height what makes him so special?
Victor wembanyama’s exceptional combination of fluidity, perimeter skill, shot-blocking instincts and feel for the game makes him special. It was usually thought that tall men cant shoot 3’s. Outside of Porzingis, there are 25 players in league history who were 7-foot-3 or taller. Combine all of their 3-point attempts per 36 minutes (4.0) and it is still less than what Wembanyama attempted per 36 minutes (5.7) for ASVEL in 2021-22. He can not only play some elite defense but he has good step back jumper also.

Now coming over to Wemba’s start in NBA. He has played 5 games with 28 minutes playing time per game and he is averaging 20.6 ppg, 8 Rebounds, 1.6 assist per game. He is currently leading all rookies in PPG. The closest rookie to him on rookie of the year ladder is Chet Holmgren and he is averaging 15.8 PPG , 7.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. The 2022’s No. 2 pick, Holmgren spent the entire season on the chilling list with a foot injury, leaving him eligible for this year’s ROY

Wemba’s defensive performance has been extraordinary he is averaging 1.4 steal and 2.2 blocks per game which shows how much his defensive presence is important for his team.  He has proven to be elite Rim defender as well as elite in perimeter defense.

Wemba last night scored 38 points and 10 rebounds and helped Spurs beat the Phoenix Suns with the final score of 132 Spurs – 121 Suns who were having the superstars like Kevin Durrant and Devin Booker playing in their starting line up. He took clutch shots with his smooth jumper in the last moments of the 4th quarter to keep the Spurs on winning track. Since blocks were tracked in 1973-74, only 3 teenagers have recorded 35+ PTS, 10+ REB, and 2+ BLK in a game: 1. LeBron James (38/10/3 – 2004) 2. Kevin Durant (42/13/2 – 2008) 3. Victor Wembanyama (38/10/2 – 2023) .

These stats speaks volume about the confidence of the rookie and how much he is ready to take the leadership role in the team. Spurs are have got 3-2 start this season up till now. We hope Wemba plays pivotal role in Spurs wins in future and gets Rookie of the year award. He is destined to be an NBA champion i believe and meant to break all NBA records. He has confidence to guard any superstar in front of him and leave his impression on them

If he takes care of his body and prevents himself from major injuries, I have no doubt he will be future hall of famer. He is part of great organization which produced the Big men like David Robinson and Tim Duncan who are inducted in the Hall of Fame.
